Discover How Cutting-Edge Tech is Revolutionizing Senior Living: A Game-Changing Shift in Hospitality

Rob Grimes April 25, 2024

As we grow older, changes in body, mind and spirit are inevitable, shifting how we consider technology with a specific focus on the needs and requirements in serving senior citizens. The emergence of advanced technology in senior living and healthcare facilities has paved the way to how they can be used within the hospitality & restaurant industries.

To understand the technology that is focused on seniors, Rob is joined this week by Terence Ronson, Founder of Pertlink. Beginning his career as a chef, and eventually making his way into hospitality IT, Terence has conceptualized and created technological solutions for senior living residences, based upon his expertise in the hotel sector of the hospitality industry. Terence’s achievements include creating Hong Kong’s first Cyber Boutique Hotel, Rosedale on the Park, and developing the first known hotel app, HOTELINMYHAND.

The pair note that unlike elderly people a few decades ago, many of today’s seniors (those 60 and over) have been using consumer technology in their daily lives for 20+ years – so it’s a more familiar concept. Technology can assist seniors in many forms. Whether it’s diet, physical or mental assistance, this age group utilizes specific technology that understands their unique needs. Voice control is one example of technology introduced in senior living spaces to complete simple tasks like changing a TV channel or asking for assistance. Hospitals have programs that track dietary restrictions so that patients only receive what they are allowed to eat.

Integrating senior focused technologies into hospitality and restaurants is underway, although a bit challenging. Unlike senior living or hotels, the hospitality industry generally has shorter stays with their patrons. Hyper-personalization technologies are on the rise in hotels, but the data collection on personal details limits knowledge and what can be executed. Similarly, audio or visual impairment can be challenging to accommodate without technology assistance.

Check out this episode of Accelerate to learn about the innovative technology available for seniors, where this technology intersects with restaurants and hotels, and where there’s still room to learn from one another.
